Blue White Chenin Blanc 1998:

The 1998 vintage is a ripe, rich wine with many layers fo flavour. Immense fruit concentration has given the wine depth which is beautifully balanced by clean acidity, adding to its poise and elegance. Tasters will find hints of blossom, ripe apple and melon overlaying a minerally core, leading to a fine long finish.

The quality of our Chenin Blanc can be attributed to access to some remarkable old vineyards in the premium wine growing area of Stellenbosch. The vineyards have been carefully selected because of their sites on a variety of soils and their varied exposure to the sun.

The grapes for Blue White came from six meticulously maintained old vineyards. The oldest of these vineyards was planted in 1929 - something of a record for a South African white wine - while the others vary in age from 18 to 34 years old. Yields are kept extremely low and range from 4 - 8 tons/ha

Each morning the grapes were brought into the cellar as quickly as possible where they were destalked, lightly crushed and gently pressed. Following cool fermentation, the young wine was left to mature on its lees for about four months. The grapes were harvested at varying degrees of ripeness and the tanks of each wine were kept separately for final blending to produce a wine with many layers of flavour. The wine is 100% Chenin Blanc, with a small proportion showing botrytis, or noble rot character for added complexity, which increases with bottle maturation.

Careful and thoughtful styling of the wine has meant that it appeals to a wide range of wine lovers, many of whom have never considered Chenin Blanc to be capable of producing a serious wine. Experience has taught us that Blue White ages gracefully and at present, the 1998 vintage is showing particularly well, leading both expert and non-expert tasters to agree that Blue White is indeed a very special Chenin Blanc.
